Newborn Session Prep Guide
Thank you for considering me to take your newborn photos! I look forward to working with you. Newborns have very special needs and taking their photos require a little more attention so I have created this guide for you to review and prep before your session.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience after delivering your baby. This will give us a chance to schedule their session. Ideally they are between 5-14 days old but sometimes things happen and they cannot make it that early, that is ok too. I will happily work with newborns older than that.
In Studio Session or In Home Sessions - Lifestyle
Newborn sessions are ideally done within the first 5-14 days of being born for several reasons: They are more likely to stay asleep and cooperate during their sessions and their flaky skin or baby acne has not set in yet. After 14 days old, they are less cooperative and it takes a lot of time to ease the baby.
Sessions start around 9:30/10 am as this is usually a successful sleepy time for baby.
Babies sleep best when the room is nice and warm.
*important* Please feed baby right before arrival as this helps them stay sleepy. A full baby is a content and sleepy baby.
If your baby takes a pacifier, be sure to keep it handy. Even if baby does not intend on using one permanently, it is often convenient during pictures to keep baby calm and soothed during session.
Please dress baby an outfit you prefer for pictures. A plain white onesie is adorable, it is always my favourite for pictures.
Your baby is working hard getting their photos taken, they will require a little more love than usual while they are modeling.
Ultimately, your baby runs the show so if he/she is fussy it is important for you to remain calm. I will work with your baby and have plenty of experience and infinite patience. Everything will be fine.
I have a small collection of hats, wraps and head bands for you to add to your session but I rely on the baby to steal the show.
Make sure your nursery or bedroom is spiffy clean so we can take photos in their new room. (Sometimes this takes place in the master bedroom as well)
If you are looking for images of your sweet little one, you need to make sure safety is your top concern. Read and in depth safety guide here to make sure you are completely comfortable with your upcoming session.
Once you’re completely comfortable, we can start shooting your newborn session and have some epic photos!
A typical newborn session is about 1-2 hours. After 2 hours, we all may need to take a break and cool off. We can get a lot of images in 2 hours so after that we can evaluate how many photos we have and you can decide if you are prepared to continue. As a mother myself, I know how exhausted you are while nursing, and taking care of your new baby.
I look forward to meeting him or her!
